Romance and Marriage

February is often referred to as the month of romance.  Statistics indicate that “approximately 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.”   Wow!  That’s a lot of lovers.

I hope you’re one of the lucky ones.  I hope that you are feeling loved today by a lover, parent, sibling or your offspring – or all of the above.  You are very fortunate.

Many people celebrate Valentine’s Day not only with the exchange of cards, but also gifts, dinner and chocolate.  Growing up as a child my parents gave me cards and chocolate on Valentine’s Day and now as an adult we still exchange cards and chocolates with each other.  It’s a wonderful opportunity to tell my parents and siblings how much I love them (though I tell them more frequently than just on this holiday) and it’s fun to read through the holiday cards and pick out the mushy ones and funny ones to express my feelings for them and to give them a smile.

There is so much sadness in this world which we see reported every day on the news, on the faces of people traveling on the subways, walking down the street.  To have a day (Valentine’s Day, Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving) to appreciate the people in our lives is very special.

If you are in a relationship, how do you know if she is the one?  How do you know what real love is, what it feels like, if you’re experiencing love?  How do you know?  Is it truly just a “feeling”?  Is there any way to truly “know” that you are in love and that you are loved in return?

Do prenups really take the romance out of relationships or is it really just the “grown up” thing to do?  The responsible thing?  Maybe it’s just plain practical marital planning, planning for your future together with your partner in this life, planning and protecting yourself, your loved one and your assets.
